Fascinated by Trinidadian activists and protagonists of the 19thC, Cozier’s work ‘Stepping’ began with a portrait of Henry Silvester Williams, a figure who was particularly interested in the predicament of people of West African descent, displaced by the colonial project, and their role in the western industrial complex.
Following on from this, the artist considers how Pan-Africanism was conveyed during his youth, predominantly through music - such as that of The Growling Tiger, Burning Spear and David Rudder. The artwork considers the pervasive role of popular music in disseminating these ideologies, referencing how speaker systems and the reverberation of sound waves created a sonic space for both dance and critical discourse.
