It Has Already Been Decided is born from the pavilion seating of Cozier’s youth. For anyone from Trinidad or New Orleans, this work will evoke memories of Carnival and Mardi Gras. But in this work, it is not the cultural performance that comes into focus. Instead, Cozier puts the function of the spectator on display. Evoked in the work’s title, we are asked to consider: What is predetermined? Is the transfer from colonial rule to neocolonial resource-grabbing simply the grim reality of how history repeats itself under new guises?
